Physician Spotlight on Dr. Thomas Herron

How did you become interested in sports medicine?

My interest in sports medicine comes from my appreciation for sports at all levels—whether it’s high school, college, professional, or even weekend warriors. I’m particularly interested in how similar the injuries can be across different stages of athleticism. From an orthopedic perspective, these injuries often require a similar approach to help athletes return to their sport. I find it rewarding to support athletes of all levels in getting back to the activities they enjoy.

What is your practice philosophy?

My practice philosophy focuses on an individualized approach tailored to helping patients return to the activities they enjoy. I place a strong emphasis on optimizing nutrition and sleep to support recovery and improve outcomes. I also prioritize maximizing non-operative treatment options before considering surgery. I prefer to take a comprehensive approach that enhances each patient’s overall well-being throughout their recovery.

In shoulder surgery, steady improvements in implant technology and the development of newer arthroscopic techniques are gradually reducing the need for larger open surgeries. These minimally invasive approaches lead to quicker recovery and less discomfort for patients. Additionally, advancements in pain control are significantly enhancing patient outcomes. Improved pain management, combined with better implants, is allowing for more accelerated rehabilitation in some cases.

Why is it important for patients to see a specialist?

It’s important for patients to see a specialist because a specialist can accurately diagnose the issue and develop a tailored treatment plan. In sports medicine, this often means exploring non-surgical options first, as surgery isn’t always necessary. A specialist can help guide patients through the best course of action to get them back to their activities as safely and efficiently as possible.

What are your personal interests?

Outside of my practice, I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter. I enjoy staying active through various forms of exercise, including biking, weight lifting, and yoga.
