Get to know Dr. Joseph Fleck, fellowship-trained podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon at Orthopaedic Surgical Associates.
View ProfileTell us a little bit about your background and how you got interested in podiatry.
My journey into podiatry began with a strong interest and desire to specialize in a field where I could make a significant impact on patients’ quality of life. I was drawn to podiatry because it allowed me to focus on the lower extremity, which is integral to mobility and daily functioning. Podiatry also offered the opportunity to dive deeper into conservative and surgical interventions that could directly address complex foot and ankle problems. I was particularly excited at the prospect of not only treating a wide range of conditions but also performing a variety of procedures, ranging from common and elective to complex reconstructive surgeries. I chose to advance my knowledge and training by pursuing an advanced fellowship, which refined my skills in complex foot and ankle surgery. The ability to help people regain mobility, alleviate pain, and restore function is incredibly rewarding, and it continues to drive my commitment to providing the best care possible for my patients.
Your training includes a highly competitive fellowship at the American Foundation of Lower Extremity Surgery and Research (AFLESR). Could you share the specialized skills or expertise you gained during this experience and how it sets you apart in your field?
My fellowship consisted of rigorous training, which allowed me to refine my skills in advanced surgical techniques, including ankle joint replacement, deformity correction, and complex reconstructive surgery. Additionally, AFLESR’s multidisciplinary approach has enabled me to collaborate with specialists in related fields such as physical therapy, sports medicine, and orthopedic rehabilitation, which enhances my ability to offer comprehensive treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs. My fellowship training has empowered me to provide patients with the highest standard of care, whether through conservative management or advanced surgical interventions, ensuring that they have the best possible path to recovery and a return to their active lifestyles.
What is your practice philosophy?
My practice philosophy is centered around a patient-first approach that combines compassionate care with evidence-based treatment. I believe in taking the time to truly listen to my patients’ concerns, understand their goals, and work together to develop a proper treatment plan. Whether the condition is acute or chronic, I prioritize conservative, non-surgical solutions whenever possible, as I believe that many foot and ankle problems can be managed effectively with the right interventions. However, if surgery is necessary, I am committed to using the most advanced techniques available to ensure quicker recovery times, less pain, and improved outcomes. My goal is to restore mobility, reduce pain, and improve the quality of life for each patient I treat, with an emphasis on education, prevention, and long-term wellness.
How do you stay current in your field?
As a foot and ankle surgeon, staying current in my field ensures that I provide optimal care to my patients. I stay up to date through a combination of continuous education, hands-on experience, and active involvement in the medical community. I regularly attend specialized conferences, such as those hosted by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), where I learn about the latest research, surgical techniques, and advances in foot and ankle care. These events provide a platform to network with leading experts and to learn from the best in the field. I also engage in weekly case discussions with AFLESR, which allows me to stay informed on evidence-based practices. Finally, I regularly participate in workshops and courses that focus on refining my technical skills, particularly in advanced surgical techniques and new technology.
What are your personal interests?
Outside of my professional life, I enjoy staying active and pursuing a variety of personal interests with my wife and our family. I am an avid golfer and Minnesota sports fan, especially my Vikings. Skol!
